What Is the FMGE Exam?
The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), officially known as the NMC Screening Test, is a licensing examination that Indian citizens must clear after completing their MBBS from a foreign university. Conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), this exam tests whether foreign medical graduates possess the knowledge and skills necessary to practice medicine safely in India. It is held twice a year, in June and December.
The FMGE is a mandatory requirement, and without clearing it, you cannot register with any State Medical Council or practice medicine in India. Understanding the exam pattern, preparing strategically, and starting early are the keys to success.
Exam Pattern and Syllabus
The FMGE is a one-day, computer-based test consisting of 300 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) divided into two parts. Each part has 150 questions and is allotted 2.5 hours. The questions cover all 19 subjects of the MBBS curriculum:
- Pre-clinical subjects: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry
- Para-clinical subjects: Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine
- Clinical subjects: Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Orthopedics, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Community Medicine
To pass, you must score a minimum of 150 out of 300 marks (50%). There is no negative marking, so it is advisable to attempt all questions.
Preparation Strategy for FMGE
Successful FMGE preparation requires a structured approach. Start by building a strong foundation in the high-yield subjects like Medicine, Surgery, OBG, Pediatrics, and Pharmacology, which collectively account for a large portion of the questions. Use standard textbooks alongside popular FMGE preparation resources and question banks. Join a reputable coaching program if possible, and take regular mock tests to assess your progress.
MedJourney recommends that students begin their FMGE preparation from the 4th year of their MBBS program. This gives you ample time to revise all subjects systematically while still focusing on your university exams. Our team connects students with experienced FMGE mentors and coaching institutes to provide the best possible preparation support.
Tips to Clear FMGE in the First Attempt
Clearing the FMGE in the first attempt requires discipline, consistency, and the right resources. Focus on clinical subjects as they carry the most weightage. Practice as many MCQs as possible from previous years' papers and standard question banks. Join study groups with fellow students to discuss and solve difficult topics. Stay updated with the latest exam pattern changes, and make sure you manage your time well during the actual exam. With proper planning and dedicated effort, clearing the FMGE is absolutely achievable.
